Watermark a PDF online: upload your PDF above, choose a text or image watermark, and download the finished PDF.

You can apply the mark to every page, the first page only, or a list of pages such as 1,3,5-9. Choose that range before you set the watermark's look.

How to add a watermark to a PDF online

This is the short route for one finished PDF:

  1. Upload the file. Open the PDF watermark tool and choose the document you want to send or share.
  2. Build the mark. Select Text watermark and type the label, or select Image watermark and upload a PNG, JPG, or JPEG logo.
  3. Choose the pages. Under Apply watermark to, select All pages, First page only, or Specific pages. For a custom selection, enter individual page numbers or ranges such as 1,3,5-9.
  4. Set it, then convert. Choose the position, rotation, and opacity. Text marks also have size and color controls. Click Convert and download the result.

Click Convert, then check a real page from the downloaded file. The preview is not the final test, especially when the PDF has small type or a busy table.

Pick the mark that matches the job

Text is best for status. DRAFT, SAMPLE, CONFIDENTIAL, and a project name tell the recipient how to treat the copy. Keep the label short; a long sentence turns into a gray stripe once it is rotated.

An image is best for identity. A company logo, signature, or ownership mark makes sense on a client proof or branded handout. WhizPDF accepts PNG, JPG, and JPEG images. Use a transparent PNG when possible, because a JPG with a white background can look like a sticker over the page.

Settings that keep the page readable

Start from the page people need to read, not from the watermark itself:

  • For a draft label: use the center and a diagonal rotation so the status is obvious, then lower the opacity until body text remains easy to scan.
  • For a logo: use a corner position and a smaller size. The logo should identify the file without competing with the heading or signature.
  • For a confidential stamp: make it visible enough to notice in a quick preview. A little more opacity is useful when the file will be printed.
  • For repeated branding: turn on the tile option. It is harder to crop out, but it adds visual noise to every page.

There is no behind-the-text switch here. If the mark is sitting on top of the words, move it into an open margin and test the downloaded file before processing a long packet.

Also check a paragraph, a table, and a signature line. A setting that looks fine on a cover page can be distracting on a dense invoice.

Watermark only the pages you need

Choose All pages when every copy needs the label. Choose First page only for a cover sheet or title page. Choose Specific pages when only certain sections need it, then enter values such as 1,3,5-9. The tool rejects invalid or out-of-range values.

Check the page numbers against the PDF itself, especially when it has a cover or a blank page. You can adjust the selection before converting, so there is no need to extract and recombine pages first.

When the output looks wrong

The mark sits on top of the important line

Move it toward an open margin, shrink it, or lower the opacity. The center is a strong choice for DRAFT; it is a bad choice for a form that someone still has to fill in.

The logo looks like a white rectangle

That background is part of the source image. Upload a transparent PNG instead. Lowering PDF opacity can fade the rectangle, but it cannot make the white pixels transparent.

An old watermark is still visible

Adding a new mark does not remove an old one. A standard watermark layer can be handled with a PDF watermark remover. If the old mark is baked into a scanned page image, it is part of the picture and needs a different review.

Watermark or redaction?

Use a watermark when the original content can remain visible and you want to label the copy. Use PDF redaction when an SSN, account number, private address, or other sensitive text must be permanently removed. A watermark is a visible label; it is not encryption and it does not erase the text underneath.

Before you upload

Only process files you are allowed to send to an online service. Remove unrelated personal details when possible and follow your employer's or client's rules. WhizPDF states that server-processed uploads are automatically deleted within 60 minutes, and free conversions are available without an account.

Frequently asked questionsQuick answers to common questions
What words can I use as a PDF watermark?

DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, a company name, or a copyright notice are common choices. Use a short label so it stays readable after rotation.

Can I watermark only some PDF pages?

Yes. Choose First page only or Specific pages. Enter individual pages and ranges such as 1,3,5-9; invalid or out-of-range values are rejected.

Can I use a logo as a PDF watermark?

Yes. Choose Image watermark and upload a PNG, JPG, or JPEG file. A transparent PNG usually gives the cleanest result.

How do I watermark specific PDF pages?

Select Specific pages under Apply watermark to, then enter page numbers or ranges such as 1,3,5-9. The watermark is applied only to those pages.

Does a watermark protect a PDF from editing?

No. It adds a visible layer; it does not encrypt the file or remove the underlying text. Use a password or redaction when you need stronger control.

Can a burned-in scan watermark be removed?

No, not cleanly. When the mark is part of the scanned page image, it is part of the picture rather than a separate watermark layer.
